Marmara, Istanbul 16 October 2023
Metropolitan municipalities from all over the world converged in Istanbul for this year’s Marmara Urban Forum (MARUF23). The final day of the event, hosted by Marmara Municipalities Union, saw the 2023 World Metropolitan Day, organized in cooperation with Metropolis and UN-Habitat, celebrated.
It sought to explore how nature-based solutions increase the resilience of the world’s metropolises, focusing on the question City and Beyond: How Can Nature Transform Metropolises?
Established in 1984, Metropolis is the global network of metropolitan areas and larger cities. From 2004, it is the metropolitan chapter of UCLG. Metropolis aims at elevating the collective voice of metropolises on the global stage, foster global cooperation, dialogue and sharing of knowledge and solutions.
World Metropolitan Day, marked on 7 October every year, is a global campaign by Metropolis and UN-Habitat celebrated since 1985 to build fairer and more prosperous metropolises. The day sets the stage for global debates on the importance of metropolitan-scale management.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Nature in Metropolises“, emphasized how nature-based solutions can increase the resilience, inclusivity and livability of urban areas, providing an environment where all kinds of experts, managers and stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, civil society, international organizations and city networks come together.
In her speech, Claudia López, mayor of Bogotá and President of the Metropolis, said:, “We, as humans, are not the only ones living on this planet; We must take care of animals, plants. We must design our cities accordingly. They need biodiverse cities, not subways”.
