NAIROBI, KENYA, 8TH JUNE 2023

The Second Session of the UN Habitat Assembly converged a wide array of participants from all over the world, and featured discussions and knowledge exchange on diverse thematic topics pertinent to sustainable urban development. Among the many imperative discussions that took place, the side event “Cities Engaged in Food System Transformation: Challenges and Opportunities” captivated the attention of participants, taking the Kenya country context to review, discuss and exchange knowledge on food systems in urban areas.

The event began with thought-provoking remarks from the side event’s co-leading organizations. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Kenya Country Office (FAO)shed light on the transformative power of urbanization, particularly in Africa. The establishment of the Urban Food Systems Coalition after the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit was highlighted for supporting local governments in bridging governance gaps related to food systems management. UN-Habitat’s Regional Office for Africa, represented by Ishaku Maitumbi, emphasized the significance of collaboration in strengthening urban-rural linkages. Acknowledging the challenges posed by global conflicts and pandemics, Mr. Maitumbi called for more joint efforts with stakeholders to implement interventions and programs that promote sustainable urbanization.

Presentations showcasing successful initiatives then followed. The Deputy Director of Food Systems from Nairobi City County shared the city’s remarkable journey in transforming its food systems. Through the development of a food governance strategy and strong partnerships with organizations like FAO and C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Nairobi embraced innovative farming technologies and sustainable practices, such as hydroponics and waste recycling.
