UN-Habitat, expressed its satisfaction with the progress made in implementing the Niger State Urban Policy since the signing the of the MOUbetween UN-Habitat and the Government of Niger State in 2017. Some of the outcomes of the implementation of the MOU include the completion of several projects, including the state urban policy, the integrated development plans for Minna Emirate and Suleja Emirate, the Niger State smart city strategy, sseveral capacity-building activities, and the completion of two demonstration projects.
So far, urban policy demonstration projects had focused on addressing water needs identified during the policy development process. policy-friendly budgeting approach, will ensure that interventions and budget allocations align with the state urban policy framework and citizen’s needs.

Mr. Akilu Kuta, the permanent secretary, Niger State Ministry of Water Resources and Dams Development, appreciates the efforts and support provided by UN-Habitat in providing water for Nigerlites. He further requests continued support and collaboration, particularly in the aspect of capacity building, to ensure the successful implementation of the state policy.
The Secretary of State Government, along with government officials, community leaders, and residents, expressed their commitment to the success of these initiatives and their dedication to improving the lives of Niger State residents.

To conclude the flag-off ceremony, the Secretary to the State Government encourages all the beneficiaries of the projects to take ownership and safeguard their sustainability. He further mentioned that the state government will take conscious actions for the full implementation of the state urban policy.
The Niger State Urban Support Programme had been established to provide technical assistance to the Niger State Government since 2017. This support was instrumental in formulatingand implementation of the State Urban Policy, with financial support from the Republic of Korea.
