Niger State Urban Policy Projects Boost Clean Water and Healthcare Access for 50,000+ Households
Urbanization through Demonstration Projects:
Over 50,000 households in Niger State set to experience enhanced access to clean water and improved healthcare through the Urban Policy demonstration projects.

Alh. Abubakar Suleiman Gawu, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State, inaugurated the commencement of a range of demonstration projects aimed at enhancing the well-being and livelihoods of Niger State residents. The flag-off ceremony took place at the Niger State Government House on December 13, 2023, signifying an ongoing commitment to implement the State Urban Policy, supported by UN-Habitat and the Republic of Korea.
As a means to implement the Niger Sate Urban Policy adopted in 2022, two additional demonstration projects had been funded by the government of Korea and UN-Habitat. The projects were carefully selected and will result to the:
- the rehabilitation of three (3) bi-water schemes at Beji Town, Tungan Mallam, and Kataeregi Town; and
- the installation of a solar-powered borehole, a 7.5KVA solar inverter, and landscaping at Kuta General Hospital.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Abubakar Suleiman Gawu, expressed his pleasure at the support of UN-Habitat and the Republic of Korea for their assistance n managing its urbanization through the formulation and implementation of the state urban policy. He noted that the present administration of Governor Umar Bago is very interested in driving the urban renewal agenda and all the future projects with Niger State policy. Recognizing the challenges faced by Niger State in terms of infrastructure and service deficits, Abubakar Suleiman said, “The two projects will improve the lives of all Nigerlites in different dimensions.”.
